Billing the new functionality as an easier way to tag photos, Facebook has rolled out new facial recognition support on their website. The new function groups similar faces from uploaded photos and suggests names as tags for the faces in the pictures. Some have called the new feature creepy. The feature is active by default, but Facebook users can opt-out of the new tool. According to the Facebook blog post, the new feature is now available in most countries after taking several months to roll out. According to this news article, the facial recognition is already the subject of a privacy probe in the EU. Privacy forums are already identifying potential abuses such as identifying protesters and tracking citizens with GPS-aware cameras. How long before photos are uploaded to Facebook for the sole purpose of identifying people?
